Adelaide players were joined by some special guests as they ran through the banner for Showdown 55 on Thursday night.
As part of the partnership between the Adelaide Crows Foundation and Variety -the Children’s Charity, Jesem Hayal, 10, and Elsie McBride, 7, took on the role of game day mascot and Jesem presented the Showdown Medal to midfielder Jake Soligo.
Variety supports kids and families who are facing challenges through sickness, disadvantage or living with disability.
In addition to their game day experience, both children and their families attended training at Adelaide Oval ahead of the game to meet the players.
Jesem lives with Type 1 Diabetes and received life-changing support from Variety.
Through a generous grant, Jesem was able to acquire an insulin pump alongside an iPhone, serving as a vital transmitter.
This innovative setup now offers a comprehensive view of his blood glucose levels, ensuring constant monitoring and stability.
With this newfound tool, Jesem experiences daily stability and control over his condition, empowering him to navigate his health with confidence and ease.
Variety has also assisted Elsie’s sister Alice, 7, who faces the challenges of both Type 1 Diabetes and ASD in her daily life.
Her condition has required her to endure up to six injections every day, rendering her unable to attend school, however thanks to Variety and their grant of $8,500, Alice now has access to an insulin pump.
This transformative device not only allows her to return to school but also eliminates the necessity for numerous daily injections.
Speaking ahead of the match, Elsie and Alice’s mum Katie said it was a special moment for the whole family.
“It’s such a great opportunity and the whole family is excited to be a part of it all,” Katie said.
“To see the players up close and personal is really fun and Elsie has been so excited all week.”
