PROBLEM STATEMENT

Aboriginal students in Australia face significant barriers in accessing quality education, perpetuating cycles of disadvantage and limiting their potential. These barriers include a lack of cultural inclusivity, limited access to resources, and systemic inequalities that impact educational outcomes.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Crows On Country provides a tailored, culturally inclusive education program, which aims to translate Aboriginal and Torres Trait Islander students love and passion for AFL to increase school attendance and literacy in science and mathematics.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The STEMfooty program has been adapted to create a culturally safe program in partnership with remote schools and teachers. The structure consists of a modified bilingual resource using differentiated pedagogy that unlocks the potential of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with suggested alignment to Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) delivered in the following stages:

Stage 1: Teacher professional development – 1 day

Stage 2: 5-week curriculum including a visit from AFC players and staff to deliver the practical component of the program

Stage 3: Participation on Community football carnivals to celebrate the student’s success in the STEMfooty program and attendance at school.
